Infant Body Work for Better Breastfeeding
What is Infant Body Work?
Our physical and occupational therapy team believes that birth is hard on babies. They experience tightness, preferences, and sometimes struggle with weakness that can influence how easily they can breastfeed. That's where body work steps in.
How does it work?
Our Keller based office houses both lactation counselors and therapists to help you succeed in breastfeeding. Using gentle massage, stretching, and mobilization techniques, our physical and occupational therapists help to influence the infant's range of motion and strength and ensure that your infant has the ability to breastfeed easily. Pairing infant body work and lactation counseling is the partnership you didn't know you needed for a successful breastfeeding journey!
When should I see a PT/OT?
If your infant is struggling with tongue ties, poor latch, head turn preference, or noticing that they're holding more tension than you feel is normal, reach out to our clinic about scheduling an evaluation with both our physical/occupational therapists and onsite lactation counselors.
Benefits of Infant Body Work:
Infant body work has multiple benefits for both mom and baby including improving latch by reducing tightness in the jaw, neck and shoulders, helping them open their mouths more fully which encourages better suction and milk transfer. This leads to more comfortable and successful breastfeeding. Body work also eases tension from birth, especially harder or longer deliveries. These gentle techniques can also support digestive comfort - reducing gas, reflux and colic-like symptoms and encourage calming and regulation. More than that though, infant body work can promote healthy movement and improve things like torticollis.
